11-21.02 – Venice Carnival in Italy

The Carnival in Venice was first recorded in 1268. The subversive nature of the festival is reflected in Italy’s many laws over the past several centuries attempting to restrict celebrations and the wearing of masks, a central feature of the Carnival. Carnival celebrations in Venice were halted for many years after the city fell under Austrian control in 1798, but were revived in the late 20th century.

As one of Spain’s major ports during the 16th century, Cadiz copied the carnival of Venice, a city with which it had much trade, and since then it has become the liveliest and most dazzling carnival town in mainland Spain, famous for its amusing and creative characters and satirical song groups.

16-21.02 – Carnival in Germany

Travel to Germany during carnival season, called Karneval or Fasching (pronounced FAH-shing), and join the colorful celebrations, street parades and costume balls.
The celebrations kick off with “Women’s Carnival” on Thursday before Ash Wednesday. Ladies, this is your day: You can kiss any man you like after cutting off his tie.
The next highlight is Rose Monday: Marching bands, dancers, and floats parade down the streets, throwing confetti, sweets, and toys. The elaborate floats often show caricatured figures mocking politicians and other personalities. Thousands of dressed-up Germans are flocking the streets every year to watch this spectacle.
On Shrove Tuesday, costume balls are held all over Germany, while the quiet Ash Wednesday marks the end of the frenzied fun.

18-22.02 – Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Although Carnival (Carnaval in Portuguese) is celebrated in towns and villages throughout Brazil and other Catholic countries, Rio de Janeiro has long been regarded as the Carnival Capital of the World. The Rio Carnaval is not only the biggest Carnival, it has also a benchmark against which every other carnival is compared and one of the most interesting artistic events on the Globe. Almost everyone has heard of the Rio Carnaval. Foreign visitors to it alone number around 500,000 every year.

Rio Carnival is a wild 4 day celebration, 40 days before Easter. It officially starts on Saturday and finishes on Fat Tuesday with the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday after which one is supposed to abstain from all bodily pleasures. Carnival with all its excesses, celebrated as a profane event, can be considered an act of farewell to the pleasures of the flesh.

21-22.02 – Mardi Gra carnival in Portugal

Carnaval or Mardi Gras is a festive season typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, mask and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations, which mark an overturning of daily life.

Free-to-play MMOGs have proven to be financially viable, based on examples like browser-based titles like Farmville and the more hardcore games like Dungeons & Dragons Online. Star Trek Online might be the next big MMOG to (eventually) adopt a similar payment plan, based on a comment from the game’s developer.

Daniel Stahl, Star Trek Online’s executive producer, addressed a forum question about the game eventually becoming free-to-play. “I could easily see STO going into a hybrid model similar to what LOTRO is doing,” he stated. “In that model, subscriptions stay as is – but you allow people to play for free but heavily limit what they can do – which in essence creates a robust way to demo the game and then if you want to keep playing, you either pay for every little thing you are interested in, or you subscribe and don’t have to worry about it.

“Turbine seems to have some interesting plans and looking at how DDO has turned around, its worth taking note.”

Creating a demo-like version of the game certainly makes a lot of sense, since it would allow players to explore the title at their leisure &mdash at no cost to them &mdash and figure out if they want to take up a career with the Federation. While Stahl’s statement is far from an official business announcement, it’s interesting to hear that a recently-released game like Star Trek Online could potentially adopt a form of the free-to-play system in the future.
